Oak Forest of the Gorge Journal
by Joy Stickney-Markgraf
"While
watching the birch tree-trunk, where a pair Red-breasted
Sapsuckers are making new sap wells- little cups-
for their baby to drink from, I notice other visitors
coming to the sweet liquid as well. A juvenile hummingbird
laps up the juice (see photo)
and a butterfly shares in the feast. Many ants are
irresistibly drawn to the spot where they in turn
become protein for the sapsuckers (see
photo)."
